  • Saree should be a flowy fabric or Georgette, satin, or any other giving drape effects
  • Saree should have one border not wider than 2 inches (5.08 cm) in width. The saree can have a plain fabric also as the border but in contrast.
  • Leggings or tight skinny-fit pants will work for this drape.
  • An edgy blouse or crop top will do just fine with this look. – Check Similar Readymade blouse designs online at G3.
  • Safety pins to secure the drape at regular intervals.

NOTE: This is a very simple drape, but doing it with your normal saree is also possible, all you need to do is fold in the Border of the saree from the left and pin at the edges, watch the video for guidance.

Using a fancy blouse will also work, but as a stylist, I would recommend a dressy top or crop top that’s body-fitted.

  • Step 1: As this is a normal saree, and we need a saree that has the border on all four corners, yet we will use a normal saree to wear this drape. You don’t need to spend on a special saree when we have this DIY trick to convert saree as needed for dhoti saree.
  • Take the lengthwise edge and fold it inside from where your lower border starts from. Pin in the edges on both lengthwise edges. Now wrap the saree around your back and bring both sides of the saree in front of where the left side should have about 1.5 m fabric and rest on the right side.
  • Step 2: Overlap the left edge with the right side saree edge at the center waist and pin this from the inside with your leggings’ waistband.
  • Step3 : Pull out the saree on the right to take hold of the pallu section and then wrap it around just roughly from your left side to the back and front again from the right side. Hold the pallu section width-wise and then make shoulder pleats. This should be smaller as much as the border is that is a max of 2.5 inches broad.
  • Step 4: Take the pleats over to your left shoulder taking about 1 m pleats hanging down free from the shoulder and pin this at the shoulder. Now take the inner edge of the saree border edge from the front bodice and pull it across to your right side under the arm and the backside waist and pin in at waistline there.
  • Step 5: Now pick and gather the pleats together from the front and drape them from front to the back on the hip level, across to the front from the left side. Hold them at the center, and spread up the pleats to have the upper and lower borders far from each other and gathered back in a triangular drape at the front hip level. Pin these pleats at that level with the inside leggings, so they are well secured in that drape fall.
  • Step 6: Now take out the remaining 1.5 m fabric we left earlier and make width-wise pleats f 2-3 inches wide. Now secure pleats with a safety pin and then drop them down to the ground, passing them between your both legs, pulling them back up from the backside, and tucking them straight at the back waistline as the border can be seen up straight.
  • Step 7: Take the other loose fabric on the right front, which now looks like a loop or, and start making pleats of 2-3 inches in the lengthwise direction. Now tuck these in your center waistline to get a clean appearance at the waist section.
  • Step 8: Adjust the front bodice drape pleats to get the pleats spread up, covering the waistline a bit to get a sober and graceful look.
